Thiemens' research involves mass independent isotope effects and their application to solar system origin, origin and evolution of life of earth, cosmochemistry (lunar, meteorites and Mars), climate change and measurements of oxygen and sulfur isotopes (including radiogenic 35S) in aerosols and greenhouse gases. His work includes Antarctic and Greenland Ice core/snow pit measurements of sulfate isotopes. Recent work has been across Tibet and the Himalayas to better understand its atmospheric chemistry and glacier ice melting rates of ice for 40% of the world's population. Two of the past years publications included oxygen isotope measurements of water on the moon (PNAS) and a fully quantitative quantum mechanical model of the isotope fractionation of nitrogen (PNAS) with synchrotron measurements and a concomitant model.
